Our City. Our Community. One way to make a difference.

The Leeds Community Foundation helps improve the quality of life of people living in disadvantaged communities. We do this by making financial grants to support local organisations and charitable groups, of which there are over 3,000 in Leeds. These can vary from a few hundred pounds, to several thousand pounds.

We encourage a spirit of local giving and provide an efficient and simple way for donors to make a long-term difference to the communities in which they live and work. We assist donors in directing their funds towards those groups and communities and can ensure the money is used in an effective and worthwhile manner.

History

The Community Foundation movement started in Ohio, USA in 1914 and was based on the concept of “local help for local needs.”  Today there are over 1,000 independent Community Foundations in 37 different countries across the globe, with almost 700 in the USA alone.

The Community Foundation Network (CFN)  is the national network linking, promoting and supporting over 60 community foundations throughout England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Needs in Leeds

In addition to working alongside private and public sector organisations to deliver grants that meet their needs and interests, our local knowledge means that we are also able to identify particular issues.  Our response to some of them has been to set up special themed funds that enable us to raise the profile of particular issues, and use this to raise funds.

Vision for Leeds

Leeds has been described as a "twin-speed" city.  Some areas are experiencing considerable success and growth.  Others face significant dis-advantage.   One of the key aims in the “Vision for Leeds 2004-2020” is to narrow the gap between the two and ensure that the continued success and prosperity of the city is shared amongst all our residents.  The Foundation plays a vital role in helping achieve that aim.
